Lessons from the Book of Mormon as taught by S.J. Hollist, in
“Lesson 28: Nephi and Lehi in Prison,” Primary 4: Book of Mormon, 100
Before a building is built, the workers make a strong foundation for the building to rest on for support. The scriptures compare Jesus Christ to a rock as being a strong foundation on which to build our lives. We build our lives on the rock foundation of Christ when we choose to live his teachings.
In this lesson Helaman's Sons, Nephi and Lehi, had built their lives on the sure foundation of the Savior which allowed them to help many Lamanites to also gain testimonies of the Savior.
Read Helaman 5
, and the fourth article of faith
Helaman was a judge elected by "the voice of the people" (Helaman 2:2
). Helaman name his sons after Nephi and Lehi so they would remember the good example of their ancestors (Helaman 5:6
We take upon us the name of Jesus Christ when we are baptized (2 Nephi 31:13
). How can you become more like Jesus Christ, and remember his good example?
Nephi gave up being the chief judge because he felt the people were too wicked and "the laws had become corrupted" (Helaman 5:2–4
Jesus Christ made it possible for us to be saved from our sins threw his atonement (Helaman 5:9–10
). We must repent so Jesus Christ can redeem us from our sins (Helaman 5:11
“it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation” (Helaman 5:12
). This means that we must follow Jesus Christ because he is the only sure foundation by which we can be saved. How can you make Jesus the foundation of your life?
Satan sends “forth his mighty winds, … shafts, [and] … hail” on individuals and families today in many way's including inappropriate movies, TV shows, and the internet. Satan has no power over those who build their lives on the foundation of Christ (Helaman 5:12
Helaman’s teachings had a good affect Nephi and Lehi (Helaman 5:13–14
). What have your parents taught you that has helped you in your life?
Nephi and Lehi were protected while in the prison as they "were encircled about as if by fire, even insomuch that they durst not lay their hands upon them for fear lest they should be burned." (Helaman 5:22–23
). We too can be helped if we are worthy threw the promptings of the Holy Ghost and with spiritual protections.
Jesus Christ communicated with the Lamanites in the prison threw "a voice as if it were above the cloud". The voice like "a whisper, and it did pierce even to the very soul" saying "repent ye, and seek no more to destroy my servants." (Helaman 5:29–32
Aminadab told the Lamanites to repent so the cloud of darkness would be removed (Helaman 5:41
). The Lamanites repented after the darkness was taken away (Helaman 5:43–47
). How do you think you would have felt if you had been there?
Angels appeared to the Lamanites (Helaman 5:48
). Then the Lamanites "did go forth, and did minister unto the people, declaring throughout all the regions round about all the things which they had heard and seen, insomuch that the more part of the Lamanites were convinced" (Helaman 5:50
Those who were converted change their actions by giving up "their hatred [of the Nephites] and the tradition of their fathers" (Helaman 5:51–52
). What are some ways we can live to show that Jesus Christ is the foundation of our testimonies?
