Book of Mormon Primary Lessons
Lessons from the Book of Mormon as taught by S.J. Hollist, in
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
"Lesson 46: The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ (Christmas),” Primary 4: Book of Mormon, (1997),163The Book of Mormon is another witness of Jesus Christ. Just as the Old and New Testaments testify of Christ, so does the Book of Mormon. We are blessed for having the Bible and the Book of Mormon as witnesses of Jesus Christ’s life and mission. Christmas is the time we celebrate the birth of the savior. The Christmas story is also summarized in the Book of Mormon in
1 Nephi 11:12–24.

The New Testament records the birth of Jesus in Jerusalem. The Book of Mormon is another written witness of Jesus Christ and tells what happened in the Americas when he was born. Book of Mormon Prophets, just as Old Testament Prophets, testified of the coming of Christ:
Lehi,
1 Nephi 10:4; King Benjamin,
Mosiah 3:5; Alma,
Alma 7:10; and Samuel the
Lamanite,
Helaman 14:2–5.
Signs of Jesus Christ’s birth were given in Bethlehem as recorded in
Luke 2:6–14 and
Matthew 2:1–2. A sign seen in Bethlehem was also seen in America as recorded in
3 Nephi 1:21. Other signs were given in America as recorded in
3 Nephi 1:15, 19.
Six hundred years before the Savior’s birth,
Nephi said "his name shall be Jesus Christ, the Son of God" (
2 Nephi 25:19). Alma prophesied that the name of the mother of the Son of God would be "Mary"(
Alma 7:10).
Jesus is the "Son of God"; in other words his Father is Heavenly Father (
Luke 1:35). Joseph was Mary’s husband. Even though Heavenly Father was the Father of both Jesus Christ’s body and spirit, Joseph took care of Jesus and raised him as a father would raise a son. Just before the birth of Jesus, an angel told Joseph to name the baby would be "Jesus" (
Matthew 1:21).
It is important that we have two scriptural witnesses of the birth and mission of Jesus Christ as "the testimony of two nations is a witness . . . that [God] remember[s] one nation like unto another . . . [God] speak[s] the same words unto one nation like unto another. And when the two nations shall run together the testimony of the two nations shall run together also" (
2 Nephi 29:8).
Compare some of the Savior’s teachings in the Bible with those in the Book of Mormon, such as the following:
Matthew 5:16 and
3 Nephi 12:16;
Matthew 7:12 and
3 Nephi 14:12; and
Matthew 5:44 and
3 Nephi 12:44.
Heavenly Father sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to earth save us all (
2 Nephi 9:21–22;
3 Nephi 27:13–14;
John 3:16). It is this great gift from our loving Heavenly Father that we symbolize and honor when we give gifts to others during the Christmas season.
What family traditions do you have that reminds you of the birth and life of Jesus Christ?

Heavenly Father sends prophets to teach us about the Savior, help us repent, and warn us of things to come. If we obey the words of the
Prophet, we can know the truth and avoid being deceived. This lesson is about the prophet Nephi, the son of Helaman. Nephi knew a murder had been committed and who the murderer was without being at the scene of the crime. As your learn more about the prophet Nephi, you can strengthen your confidence in the words of the living prophet.
The Gadianton robbers were "murderers and plunderers were a band who had been formed by Kishkumen and Gadianton" (
Helaman 6:18). They had taken oaths "that they would protect and preserve one another in whatsoever difficult circumstances they should be placed, that they should not suffer for their murders, and their plunderings, and their stealings . . . that whatsoever wickedness his brother should do he should not be injured by his brother" (
Helaman 6:21–22). They had done "murder, and plunder, and steal, and commit whoredoms and all manner of wickedness" (
Helaman 6:23).
Because of the wickedness of the people, Nephi "did exclaim in the agony of his soul . . . [he] bowed himself upon the tower which was in his garden, which tower was also near unto the garden gate by which led the highway." (
Helaman 7:6–7, 10). When the people saw him "they ran and told the people what they had seen, and the people came together in multitudes that they might know the cause of so great mourning for the wickedness of the people" (
Helaman 7:11–12).
Nephi told the people "ye ought to marvel because ye are given away that the devil has got so great hold upon your hearts . . . O repent ye, repent ye! . . . turn ye unto the Lord your God." (
Helaman 7:13–18). What must you do to repent? (See
Lesson 14)
Nephi said that if they did not repent "this great city, and also all those great cities which are round about, which are in the land of our possession, shall be taken away" (
Helaman 7:19, 22). Nephi know these things would happen "because the Lord God has made them known unto [him]" (
Helaman 7:29).
How can listening to the living prophet help us in our lives? (
D&C 21:4–6.)
The judges respond saying "Why do ye not seize upon this man and bring him forth, that he may be condemned according to the crime which he has done?" (
Helaman 8:1). Some of the people defend Nephi sayin
g "he is a good man, and those things which he saith will surely come to pass except we repent" (
Helaman 8:7–9). Sometimes it takes courage to stand up for the truth. We too can sustain the
living prophet by following his teachings and example.
All the holy prophets have testified of "
the Son of God" (
Helaman 8:14–16).
Our living prophet has also taught us about Jesus Christ.Nephi told the people that their chief judge
"is murdered, and . . . [the murderers] both belong to your secret band, whose author is Gadianton" (
Helaman 8:27–28.) Nephi knew what had happened because he was a prophet.
As the men ran to the judgment seat they thought
"if this thing which he has said concerning the chief judge be true, that he be dead, then will we believe that the other words which he has spoken are true" (
Helaman 9:2). These five men eventually believed all of Nephi’s words (
Helaman 9:4–5, 39). What can we do to strengthen our testimonies of the living prophet?
The other judge
s "did cry out against Nephi, saying: Behold, we know that this Nephi must have agreed with some one to slay the judge, and then he might declare it unto us, that he might convert us unto his faith" (
Helaman 9:16). Nephi’s response was to show them another sign that helped them to capture the murderers (
Helaman 9:25–35).
"there were some among the people, who said that Nephi was a prophet" (
Helaman 9:39–41).
In this dispensation, prophets continue to reveal knowledge from Heavenly Father to help guide, prepare, and protect us.Labels: Book of Mormon, Gadianton, Helaman, Jesus Christ, Lehi, Lesson 29, Nephi, Prophet
“Lesson 28: Nephi and Lehi in Prison,” Primary 4: Book of Mormon, 100Before a building is built, the workers make a strong foundation for the building to rest on for support. The scriptures compare Jesus Christ to a rock as being a strong foundation on which to build our lives. We build our lives on the rock foundation of Christ when we choose to live his teachings.
In this lesson Helaman's Sons, Nephi and Lehi, had built their lives on the sure foundation of the Savior which allowed them to help many Lamanites to also gain testimonies of the Savior.
Read
Helaman 5, and the
fourth article of faith.
Helaman was a judge elected by "the voice of the people" (
Helaman 2:2). Helaman name his sons after Nephi and Lehi so they would remember the good example of their ancestors (
Helaman 5:6).
We take upon us the name of Jesus Christ when we are baptized (
2 Nephi 31:13). How can you become more like Jesus Christ, and remember his good example?
Nephi gave up being the chief judge because he felt the people were too wicked and "the laws had become corrupted" (
Helaman 5:2–4).
Jesus Christ made it possible for us to be saved from our sins threw his atonement (
Helaman 5:9–10). We must repent so Jesus Christ can redeem us from our sins (
Helaman 5:11).
“it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation” (
Helaman 5:12). This means that we must follow Jesus Christ because he is the only sure foundation by which we can be saved. How can you make Jesus the foundation of your life?
Satan sends “forth his mighty winds, … shafts, [and] … hail” on individuals and families today in many way's including inappropriate movies, TV shows, and the internet. Satan has no power over those who build their lives on the foundation of Christ (
Helaman 5:12).
Helaman’s teachings had a good affect Nephi and Lehi (
Helaman 5:13–14). What have your parents taught you that has helped you in your life?
Nephi and Lehi were protected while in the prison as they "were encircled about as if by fire, even insomuch that they durst not lay their hands upon them for fear lest they should be burned." (
Helaman 5:22–23). We too can be helped if we are worthy threw the promptings of the Holy Ghost and with spiritual protections.
Jesus Christ communicated with the Lamanites in the prison threw "a voice as if it were above the cloud". The voice like "a whisper, and it did pierce even to the very soul" saying "repent ye, and seek no more to destroy my servants." (
Helaman 5:29–32).
Aminadab told the Lamanites to repent so the cloud of darkness would be removed (
Helaman 5:41). The Lamanites repented after the darkness was taken away (
Helaman 5:43–47). How do you think you would have felt if you had been there?
Angels appeared to the Lamanites (
Helaman 5:48). Then the Lamanites "did go forth, and did minister unto the people, declaring throughout all the regions round about all the things which they had heard and seen, insomuch that the more part of the Lamanites were convinced" (
Helaman 5:50).
Those who were converted change their actions by giving up "their hatred [of the Nephites] and the tradition of their fathers" (
Helaman 5:51–52). What are some ways we can live to show that Jesus Christ is the foundation of our testimonies?

"Lesson 5: Lehi and His Family Are Led through the Wilderness," Primary 4: Book of Mormon, 16
When we do all we can and trust in Heavenly Father, he will guide us. We all have challenges in our lives that might seem impossible to solve. If we do all we can and put our trust in Heavenly Father, he will help us find the answers. Do your best and trust in the Savior no matter what happens.
Read 1 Nephi 16, Alma 37:38–46, and Proverbs 3:5–6.
Lehi was blessed for his faith and obedience as he traveled into the wilderness: ". . . as [he] arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness." (1 Nephi 16:10).
As Nephi was hunting, his steal bow broke. His family was hungry and fatigued from their travels. "Laman and Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael did begin to murmur exceedingly . . . and also my father began to murmur against the Lord his God." (1 Nephi 16:17–21).
Although it is easy to complain when things don’t go the way you want, Nephi knew that complaining wouldn't fix the problem, and instead decided to do something about it. Even though Nephi was tired and hungry, he did not complain, but instead "did make out of wood a bow, and out of a straight stick, an arrow; wherefore, I did arm myself with a bow and an arrow, with a sling and with stones. And I said unto my father: Whither shall I go to obtain food?" Lehi, prayed and was prompted to look at the ball he had found outside his tent. ". . . Nephi, did go forth up into the top of the mountain, according to the directions which were given upon the ball. And . . . did slay wild beasts [and] did obtain food for [their] families." (1 Nephi 16:22–32).
We too can be a good example to our families by finding solutions to problems instead of just complaining about them. Just as Lehi had the brass ball to lead the way, we have the scriptures, the Holy Spirit and other resources to help us find our way. Just as the Ball worked on faith and obedience to the commandments, so does our ability to fell and hear the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

“Lesson 4: The Tree of Life,” Primary 4: Book of Mormon, 12In this lesson you will learn about symbols that Lehi saw in a dream and their meanings.
Read
1 Nephi 8,
1 Nephi 11, and
1 Nephi 15:21–36.
"[Lehi] beheld a tree, whose fruit was desirable to make one happy . . . [he] beheld that it was most sweet, above all . . . the fruit thereof was white . . . it filled [his] soul with exceedingly great joy; [he was] desirous that [his] family should partake of it also . . ." (
1 Nephi 8:10–12).
Symbols and their meanings in Lehi’s dream:
1. The tree (
1 Nephi 8:10) - The love of God in giving the world his Only Begotten Son (
1 Nephi 11:21–22;
John 3:16)
2. The fruit (
1 Nephi 8:11) - Eternal life (
1 Nephi 15:36;
D&C 14:7)
3. The rod of iron (
1 Nephi 8:19) - The word of God (
1 Nephi 15:23–24)
4. Mist of darkness (
1 Nephi 8:23) - Temptations of the devil (
1 Nephi 12:17)
5. Great and spacious building (
1 Nephi 8:26–27) - Pride of the world (
1 Nephi 11:36)
Nephi asked the angel to show him the meaning of the tree, he saw a vision of the birth and ministry of the Savior. Nephi saw that Jesus Christ, because of his love for us, would be crucified for our sins so that we might repent and gain eternal life. Eternal life means living with Heavenly Father as families in the celestial kingdom.
The word of God can be found in the scriptures, and from our Prophet that leads the church today. Reading the Book of Mormon every day can help us stay on the path back to our Father in Heaven.
The temptations of the devil can confuse us and lead us astray. Satan tempts us every day to leave the strait and narrow path. Holding steadfast to the "Iron Rod" helps us stay on the strait and narrow path. This can include reading daily from the Book of Mormon, obeying parents, praying, being honest, choosing good friends, choosing good entertainment, and so on.
Those that put value into the Pride of the world will view those who hold fast to the teachings to God as peculiar, and will mock them. Satan encourages these people to make fun of those who believe in the word of God.

"Lesson 2: Nephi Follows His Father, the Prophet," Primary 4: Book of Mormon, 5A prophet is a man called by God to speak for Him. When a prophet speaks for God, it is as if God were speaking. Prophets have always told people what Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ want them to do. We will be blessed when we follow the prophet.

sixth article of faith.
Lehi prays for his people, and sees a vision of the destruction of Jerusalem that is soon to come (
1 Nephi 1:5-13). As a result, Lehi goes to preach to the people of Jerusalem to try and warn them of what is to come. He also testifies of the coming of the Jesus Christ (
1 Nephi 1:18-20). Lehi was mocked because of this, and the people attempted to kill him.
Prophets have always testified of Jesus Christ. We can know that Jesus is the Savior by prayerfully studying the Book of Mormon and by obeying the commandments.
"Lord spake unto [Lehi] . . . and said unto him: Blessed art thou Lehi, because of the things which thou hast done; and because thou hast been faithful and declared unto this people the things which I commanded thee . . . the Lord commanded [Lehi] . . . that he should take his family and depart into the wilderness . . ." (
1 Nephi 2:1–3).
Lehi and his family took provisions, and left behind everything else, including their riches. His sons Laman and Lemuel "murmered" (complained) because of their "stiffneckedness" (Stubbornness, pride). One of his other sons, Nephi, "did cry unto the Lord . . . and did soften [his] heart [and believed] all the words which had been spoken by [his] father; wherefore, [he] did not rebel . . . like [his] brothers" (
1 Nephi 2:11-13,16).
We have a prophet today that leads guides Jesus' Church (
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints), and we can know the truthfulness of his words if we are willing to pray for our own personal confirmation.
