Book of Mormon Primary Lessons

Lessons from the Book of Mormon as taught by S.J. Hollist, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Book of Mormon Primary Lessons

Hi, my name is S.J. Hollist. For the year 2008 I was called to be a Primary Teacher in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’, Richardson Stake, Sachse Ward. I fulfilled this calling willingly and voluntarily with no compensation other then spiritual gifts from a loving Heavenly Father.

The lessons for the year were from the Book of Mormon which inspired me to create this blog. This blog contains my lesson notes and links to scriptures and the lesson manual. If you have ever wondered what the Book of Mormon is about, or are just looking for a quick lesson on a certain topic, I believe you'll find this blog very helpful.

If you are looking for a basic idea as to what the Book of Mormon is all about, I suggest starting with Lesson 33, and then if you have additional time check out Lesson 1 and Lesson 44; you can go as far as you like from there.

It is my testimony to you, that the Book of Mormon will not only help you to better understand The Holy Bible and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but that it will help you find peace in your life if you live by the principles taught within it. The Book of Mormon is not a replacement for The Holy Bible, but is an additional testament of Jesus Christ, and a companion to The Holy Bible; given to us by a loving Heavenly Father.

Since the lessons are done on a weekly basis, with some weeks having special events, I've also included some notes on the events from weeks I was not teaching, or that had other events happening that week. I hope this will give those who are unfamiliar with the LDS Church a basic idea of how we worship, through the eyes of an individual member of the LDS Church.

Lesson 44 - Book of Mormon Promise

“Lesson 44: Moroni and the Book of Mormon Promise,” Primary 4: Book of Mormon, (1997),156

Moroni promises that we can gain a personal testimony of the Book of Mormon and learn "how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men" (Moroni 10:3) as we study it and live its teachings throughout their lives. A testimony of the Book of Mormon comes by the power of the Holy Ghost.

Read Moroni 10 and Joseph Smith—History 1:30–35, 59–60. Also see Mormon 8:1–4, 16, the title page of the Book of Mormon, and the eighth article of faith.

Moroni wanted us to "remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men" (Moroni 10:3).

Moroni said we should "ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ" to find out if the Book of Mormon is true (Moroni 10:4).

The "power of the Holy Ghost" can help you know the Book of Mormon is true (Moroni 10:5).

Moroni’s promise to us is that we can gain a personal testimony as to the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon if "ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith" (Moroni 10:4).

How can we recognize the power of the Holy Ghost when he is testifying to us that the Book of Mormon is true? The Lord prompts us most often through our feelings. The Holy Ghost often gives us a feeling of peace that something is right and good. It may be a warm feeling inside us.

The most important thing you can learn from studying the Book of Mormon is that Jesus is the Christ. (See the title page of the Book of Mormon).

Moroni said the the Book of Mormon "shall be brought out of the earth, and it shall shine forth out of darkness, and come unto the knowledge of the people; and it shall be done by the power of God" (Mormon 8:16).

The Prophet Joseph Smith received the gold plates from out of the earth were Moroni buried them, and translated them into the Book of Mormon.

Now that the work of the Book of Mormon prophets and the Prophet Joseph Smith has been completed, our responsibility is to study it, gain a testimony of it, live its teachings, and share our testimony with others.

When we gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon, we also gain a testimony that: Jesus is the Christ; Joseph Smith is a prophet of God; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true church of God.

    Baby Blessing

As a worthy Priesthood holder, I had the opportunity to bless my two 2 month old babies during Sacrament Meeting.  This is the first ordinance, of many, that they will receive in their lives as member of the LDS church.  This particular blessing was mainly to officially name the children for the church's records, and as well as to give the child any other blessings they may required in their lives, as dictated by revelation trough the Holy Spirit.

Over the last couple of days I had been nervously preparing for this blessing, as it would be the first time for me to give a Father's Blessing.  The Bishop had given me a Priesthood manual that contained guidelines for different Priesthood blessings, so I read over the one on Baby Blessings as well as studied the manual's lesson on Father's Blessings.

My Father was also in town to take part in the blessing, and I invited a few friends to join me along with the Bishopric in the circle we formed around the babies while I blessed them.  All involved were worthy priesthood holders.

The actual words to the prayer, other then the naming of the babies, were not pre-determined by church policy, but derived from thoughts and inspiration that had come to me while I was quietly studying and praying to invite the Holly Spirit to give me guidance in this task.  The blessings weren't elaborate, but the peaceful feeling of the Holy Spirit was there.

Since this was the first Sunday of the month (typically when such blessings are done) we had the opportunity to bear our testimonies.  My Dad went up first and talked about the opportunity he had to bless me as a baby, as well as another blessing that is typically received as a young teenager, called a Patriarchal blessing.  This blessing is very personal to the one receiving it, and is done in a private setting; though my Dad and Step Mother were there when I received it.  Although my dad didn't go into much detail, it was interesting to remember some of the things promised to me (as long as I live worthy of God's blessings) that had come to pass, just as these babies came into my life; and because of them coming into my life.

I went up myself and bore my testimony of the miracles I had personally witnessed in my life that helped my wife and I reach parenthood, and the blessings that truly had been realized in my life.  My wife did the same after I had gone up, despite my urging her to go up before me.  The Sacrament meeting over all was very uplifting and spiritually nourishing, and the experience helped me feel closer to and more love for my young family.
